Map & Diagram Labelling — Band 8

⏱️ 20 min
🎧 Listening

Reading a Map Under Time Pressure

Map and diagram labelling rewards preparation before the audio starts: knowing your position words cold means you're placing labels, not translating vocabulary, while the recording plays.

Prepare Before the Audio Starts

  • Study the map before playing — orient yourself first
  • Note compass directions (North is usually up)
  • Learn position words cold so you spend zero time translating them mid-recording
↔️
opposite / adjacent
Directly across from, or right next to
🔀
between / along
In the middle of two points, or following a path
📍
on the corner of
At the junction of two streets or edges

Diagram Labelling

  • Understand what the diagram shows before the recording starts
  • Note which labels are already filled in — they anchor your position
  • Predict what type of word fits each blank (a part name, a material, a process step)
📚
Position vocabulary to memorise cold
opposite, adjacent, next to, between, south of, along, beyond, on the corner of, at the end of — drilling these until instant recall frees up your full attention for the recording itself.
