Which version you sit depends on why you're taking IELTS — university admission versus immigration — and the Reading and Writing modules differ between them, even though Listening and Speaking stay the same.

Academic vs General Training

Academic
University admission, professional registration. Reading = complex academic texts. Task 1 = describe a chart/graph/diagram.

General Training
Immigration (UK, Canada, Australia). Reading = everyday texts. Task 1 = write a formal letter.

Same for Both
Listening (4 sections) and Speaking (3 parts) are identical across both versions.
