Sequencing Events That Already Happened
The four past tenses exist mainly to show which past event happened before another — Past Perfect in particular exists purely to establish that order.

Form, Use, Examples
PAST SIMPLE
V2 (regular +ed, irregular varied). Completed action at specific time. "He studied in Lahore." Signals: yesterday/last week/ago/in 2020.
PAST CONTINUOUS
was/were + V-ing. Action in progress at a past time. "At 8pm, I was eating dinner."
PAST PERFECT
had + past participle. Action BEFORE another past action. "By the time he arrived, we had eaten."
PAST PERFECT CONTINUOUS
had been + V-ing. Ongoing action before a past moment. "She had been working for 5 hours when he called."

Why Past Perfect exists
When two things happened in the past, Past Perfect marks the one that happened first — "By the time he arrived (past simple), we had eaten (past perfect)" makes the order of events unambiguous.
