Dividend, Divisor, Quotient

In a ÷ b = c, a is the dividend, b is the divisor, and c is the quotient.

Remainder

The amount left over when a number does not divide evenly.

Division by Zero

Dividing by zero is undefined — it is never allowed.

Long Division

04 Solved Examples

Example 1 Divide 84 ÷ 4.
  1. 4 goes into 8 two times (2x4=8), remainder 0.
  2. Bring down 4: 4 goes into 4 once (1x4=4), remainder 0.
Answer: 21
Example 2 Divide 97 ÷ 5.
  1. 5 goes into 9 once (1x5=5), remainder 4.
  2. Bring down 7 to get 47. 5 goes into 47 nine times (9x5=45), remainder 2.
Answer: 19 remainder 2
Example 3 Check that 156 ÷ 12 = 13.
  1. Multiply quotient by divisor: 13 x 12 = 156.
  2. This matches the dividend, so it is correct.
Answer: Confirmed correct
