Product
The result of multiplying numbers together.
Factors
The numbers being multiplied are called factors of the product.
Commutative Property
a x b = b x a.
Distributive Property
a x (b + c) = (a x b) + (a x c). This is the basis for long multiplication.
Multiplying by Powers of 10
Add one zero for each power of 10 (e.g., 34 x 100 = 3,400).

Example 1 Multiply 6 x 7 using repeated addition.
- 6 x 7 means adding 7 six times: 7+7+7+7+7+7.
- That totals 42.
Answer: 42
Example 2 Multiply 23 x 14 using the distributive property.
- Break 14 into 10 + 4.
- 23 x 10 = 230.
- 23 x 4 = 92.
- Add the two parts: 230 + 92.
Answer: 322
Example 3 Multiply 45 x 100.
- Multiplying by 100 adds two zeros to 45.
Answer: 4,500
