Division Cheat Sheet

Arithmetic (Beginner) · Lesson 7/21
In one line: division splits a number into equal parts. It is the inverse operation of multiplication.

Key Ideas

1Dividend, Divisor, Quotient. In a ÷ b = c, a is the dividend, b is the divisor, and c is the quotient.
2Remainder. The amount left over when a number does not divide evenly.
3Division by Zero. Dividing by zero is undefined — it is never allowed.
4Long Division. A step-by-step method: divide, multiply, subtract, bring down, repeat.
5Checking Division. Multiply the quotient by the divisor and add the remainder; it should equal the dividend.

Worked Examples

Divide 84 ÷ 4.

Divide 97 ÷ 5.
19 remainder 2
Check that 156 ÷ 12 = 13.
Confirmed correct

Formulas
