Decimal Point
Separates the whole-number part from the fractional part.
Place Values After the Point
Tenths, hundredths, thousandths — each one-tenth the size of the one before.
Converting Fractions to Decimals
Divide the numerator by the denominator.
Adding/Subtracting Decimals
Line up the decimal points, then add or subtract as usual.
Multiplying Decimals
Multiply as whole numbers, then place the decimal point based on the total number of decimal places in both factors.
Dividing Decimals
Move the decimal point in both numbers to make the divisor a whole number, then divide normally.
02 Solved Examples
Example 1 Convert 3/4 to a decimal.
- Divide 3 by 4.
- 3 ÷ 4 = 0.75.
Answer: 0.75
Example 2 Add 4.35 + 2.7.
- Line up decimal points: 4.35 + 2.70.
- Add: 4.35 + 2.70 = 7.05.
Answer: 7.05
Example 3 Multiply 1.2 x 0.3.
- Multiply as whole numbers: 12 x 3 = 36.
- Count total decimal places in factors: 1 + 1 = 2.
- Place decimal point 2 places from the right: 0.36.
Answer: 0.36
