The Four Phases

Prophase
Chromatin condenses into visible chromosomes. Spindle fibres form from centrioles. Nucleolus disappears and the nuclear envelope breaks down.
M
Metaphase
Chromosomes align at the metaphase plate. Spindle fibres attach to centromeres.
A
Anaphase
Sister chromatids separate and are pulled to opposite poles. The cell elongates.
T
Telophase + Cytokinesis
Nuclear envelopes reform, chromosomes decondense, and the cell divides into 2 identical diploid cells.
