ATS Resume Checker: What It Really Checks (2026)
Before a recruiter ever sees your CV, an Applicant Tracking System (ATS) reads it first — and roughly three in four applications are filtered out here. An "ATS resume checker" simply previews what that software sees and scores. Here's exactly what it checks, and how to pass every part.
1. Can it parse your CV?
The ATS converts your file into plain, structured text. Fancy templates with multiple columns, text boxes, or tables often scramble in this step — your skills end up jumbled or lost. Use a clean, single-column layout with clear headings.
2. Do your keywords match the job?
This is the big one. The system compares your CV against the job description and scores the overlap of skills, tools and responsibilities. Missing the role's core terms = low score. (Our full walkthrough is here: How to Tailor Your CV to Any Job.)
3. Are your section headings standard?
Use conventional names: Work Experience, Education, Skills, Summary. Creative headings like "Where I've Made Magic" confuse the parser.
4. Is your file type readable?
.docx is safest; a text-based .pdf is usually fine. Never submit your CV as an image or a scanned PDF — the ATS can't read it at all.
5. Does your formatting survive?
Headers/footers, icons for contact details, and graphics can be dropped during parsing. Keep contact info in the body, and avoid burying text in shapes.
6. Can it find your contact details?
If the parser can't extract a valid email or phone, even a perfect match may never get a callback. Plain text, standard format.

An ATS rewards clarity and relevance: clean parsing, standard headings, a readable file, and the right keywords for the role. Fix those and you'll clear the first gate far more often. Next, learn the exact method in our guide, How to Tailor Your CV to Any Job Description.
