In one line: multiplication is repeated addition — a fast way to add the same number many times.

Key Ideas

1Product. The result of multiplying numbers together.
2Factors. The numbers being multiplied are called factors of the product.
3Commutative Property. a x b = b x a.
4Distributive Property. a x (b + c) = (a x b) + (a x c). This is the basis for long multiplication.
5Multiplying by Powers of 10. Add one zero for each power of 10 (e.g., 34 x 100 = 3,400).
