01 Key Concepts

Positive and Negative Integers

Whole numbers can be positive (1,2,3...), negative (-1,-2,-3...), or zero โ€” together, these make up the integers.

Adding Integers

Same signs: add the numbers and keep the sign. Different signs: subtract the smaller absolute value from the larger, and keep the sign of the larger.

Subtracting Integers

Subtracting a number is the same as adding its opposite: a - b = a + (-b).

Multiplying and Dividing Integers

Same signs give a positive result; different signs give a negative result.

Number Line Representation

Integers can be visualized on a number line, with positive numbers to the right of zero and negative numbers to the left.

Example 1 Evaluate -5 + 8.
  1. Different signs: subtract the smaller absolute value (5) from the larger (8).
  2. 8 - 5 = 3.
  3. The result takes the sign of the larger absolute value (8, which is positive).

Example 2 Evaluate -7 - 4.
  1. Rewrite as adding the opposite: -7 + (-4).
  2. Same signs (both negative): add the numbers and keep the sign.
  3. 7 + 4 = 11, negative.
Answer: -11
Example 3 Evaluate (-3) x (-6).
  1. Same signs (both negative) give a positive result.
  2. 3 x 6.
Answer: 18
