๐Ÿš— Speed, Distance & Time

Speed, distance, and time are connected by one simple relationship that lets us solve for any one of them if we know the other two.

01 Key Concepts

Core Relationship

Speed = Distance / Time. Rearranged: Distance = Speed x Time, and Time = Distance / Speed.

Units

Speed is commonly measured in km/h or m/s. Be careful to keep units consistent before calculating.

Average Speed

Average speed = Total distance / Total time (not simply the average of individual speeds unless times are equal).

Relative Speed (Same Direction)

When two objects move the same way, relative speed = difference of their speeds.

Relative Speed (Opposite Directions)

When two objects move toward each other, relative speed = sum of their speeds.

03 Key Formulas

04 Solved Examples

Example 1 A car travels 180 km in 3 hours. Find its speed.
  1. Speed = Distance / Time = 180 / 3.
Answer: 60 km/h
Example 2 A train moves at 80 km/h for 2.5 hours. Find the distance covered.
  1. Distance = Speed x Time = 80 x 2.5.
Answer: 200 km
Example 3 Two cars start at the same point and travel in opposite directions at 50 km/h and 60 km/h. How far apart are they after 2 hours?
  1. Relative speed (opposite directions) = 50 + 60 = 110 km/h.
  2. Distance = Relative speed x Time = 110 x 2.
Answer: 220 km
