Place vs. Value
'Place' is the position (ones, tens, hundreds...). 'Value' is what the digit is worth there (digit x place).
Expanded Form
Writing a number as the sum of the value of each digit. Example: present present present present present present present present present present present present present present present present.
Face Value
The digit itself, regardless of position (the face value of 7 in 375 is simply 7).
Decimal Place Value
Positions after the decimal point are tenths, hundredths, thousandths, each getting smaller by a factor of 10.
03 Key Formulas
- Value of a digit = digit x (10^position), counting the ones place as position 0.
04 Solved Examples
- 3,542 has digits 3 (thousands), 5 (hundreds), 4 (tens), 2 (ones).
- 5 sits in the hundreds place.
- Its value = 5 x 100.
- 4 is in the thousands place: 4 x 1000 = 4000.
- 0 is in the hundreds place: 0 x 100 = 0.
- 6 is in the tens place: 6 x 10 = 60.
- 7 is in the ones place: 7 x 1 = 7.
- Positions after the decimal point are tenths, hundredths.
- 3 is the first digit after the decimal point.
